- On October 10, 2022
Today, metal roofs have become quite popular, and many people choose to have one installed when building a house. However, temperature is one thing that needs to be considered. If your house or building has a metal roof, you need to ensure that it is properly ventilated.
How to Reduce Heat from a Metal Roof
There are different ways that you can use to regulate the temperatures in your home when you have a metal roof. They include:
Using Spray Foam Insulation
This type of polyurethane foam is usually sprayed on the area that is being insulated from cold or heat. Spray foam is also an excellent absorber of heat and insulator of cold, making it ideal for use in hot and cold climatic conditions.
Make a Ridge Vent
This type of ventilation is part of your house or commercial building’s ventilation system and is used with other building components. The ridge vent installation allows hot air to escape through the roof and ensures air circulates properly in your home.
What is A Metal Roof Ridge Vent?
A ridge vent is one of the most commonly used solutions for reducing heat with metal roofs. The ridge vents for metal roofs are installed with a specific design at the highest part of the roof. The only difference between general ridge vents and ridge vents used for metal roofs is their application.
Where to Place a Ridge Vent
Before installing a ridge vent, a bead of sealant is nestled between the foam closure or metal and the underside of the vent, filling all voids. Sealants and caulking are ideal for exterior use and be impervious to weathering using either polyurethane or butyl sealants. The caulking and sealants should be compatible with and even adhere to the materials they are applied to.
Ensure to check the sealant manufacturer’s instructions and installation guide of the metal manufacturer for compatibility. Place or roll out the ridge vent along the whole slot length covering the 6” minimum of the uncut ridge on each end. If using R-Series products, you should secure the ridge at the lead edge and insert the end cap. Pull the vent tightly and secure it at 10 feet. Pull the remaining part of the vent tight and secure, and then insert the end cap. Multiple lengths of the vent can also be joined by butting the different sections tightly together. At the end of every section, you should insert an end cap.
You should then attach the vent to your roof deck metal fasteners in all the two corners at the end of the vent. You should then drive two fasteners through your vent and foam end cap to help hold the foam in position on the ends of the ridge. The fasteners should penetrate your wood roof deck about 3 ⁄4”. It is advisable to fasten the vent to the ridge before hip or ridge cap installation.
The Importance of Metal Roof Ridge Vent Foam
Roof vent foam is an excellent solution for property owners who install metal roofs for their buildings or houses. To keep the house cool, you must make space for the air to move through. However, leaving it blank can also cause unwanted issues, such as roof-climbing animals or pests entering the building. That is why ridge closure and venting foam were invented as the perfect solution.
It is recommended that metal roof ridge vent foam is placed on the ridge cap itself or the roof. This is because metals tend to expand to a certain degree on hot days, which may close the space that you initially intended for ventilation. In case it is closed, then no ventilation will be available. Providing a foam layer can help avoid this closer and bring in some spaces that allow fresh air from the outdoors to come in and will enable the removal of inner hot air.
