So many homeowners now choose to install a metal roof over all other roofing systems. In contrast to traditional asphalt shingle roofing, a metal roof provides homeowners with a reliable roof that lasts longer and has more curb appeal. Are you looking to install a metal roof? Here’s what you need to know.
Your Guide to Metal Roof Installation
How It Works
A metal roof is a great investment for your home. To experience all the benefits of a metal roof, care and attention must be paid to how it is installed. Choosing professional and experienced metal roofing contractors that can guarantee proper installation and lasting results is critical.
If your existing roof is in good condition, the metal roof can be installed over the existing shingles. This will save you the cost of removing the old shingles and disposing of them. Our team will assess your current roof to let you know if this is a possibility.
Roof Preparation
The process of installing metal roofing starts by preparing the roof. This includes removing all foreign objects and sweeping the roof clean of any dirt and debris.
Underlayment
The second step in preparing the roof base is to install a titanium paper barrier underlayment over the existing shingles. The protective underlayment protects your roof from any leaks. The underlayment is installed from the ledge up to the ridge with a 4” overlap. The water barrier is installed flush with the chimney and 1 ½” up on vent pipes, and the top is sealed against the vertical surfaces. If your home is a new build or shingles are to be removed, we add an additional ice and water shield from base to 3 ft. of the perimeter on eaves and gables to ensure additional protection against leakage.
Air Flow Ventilation
As warm air rises from the building’s interior, condensation may build up. It is important to provide sufficient ventilation and install proper moisture barriers below the roofing to prevent this. The right ventilation requires air circulation along the entire roof perimeter. Ironclad uses a unique ridge vent system to address these issues in the best way possible for the customer.
